How do I tell how old my hamster is?

It’s quite difficult to find out your hamster age just by looking at it as they live very short lives and become adults in a short period of time. However, the best way to guess their age is by looking at their fur: when they are less than a year old, they have full fur, but once they are older than a year, their fur begins to thin until it becomes thinner and thinner towards the end of their life at the age of 2,5 or 3ish.

They also tend to become lazier the older they get – less energy, less interest in toys and food etc.

If you have a baby hamster, you can tell they are less than 2 weeks old if their eyes are still shut.

How old is a 2-year-old syrian hamster?

Syrian hamsters often live between 2 and 3 years, so when your Syrian hamster reaches the age of 2, they are nearing the end of it. In human years your Syrian hamster would be 66ish. You will probably find that your hamster becomes more lethargic and might be less interested in treats and playtime. The best thing to do is to make sure that your hamster has a quiet area to live and that they are being kept as stress free as possible. This doesn’t mean you can’t hold and cuddle your hamster, it might just be that – especially towards the 3 years- they are less interested because they are tired and old.

How many human years do hamsters live?

Hamsters tend to live between 2 and 3 human years. This means that when a hamster reaches the age of 2 years, they are getting old and are often not so bothered about playtime anymore. Their weight might fluctuate, and they tend to sleep more. This is all normal part of being old.

How old are hamsters when they are sold?

Hamsters are often between 6 and 8 weeks (about 2 months) old when they are put up for sale in a shop. They are normally left with their siblings, so if there are many baby hamsters in the nest, they are on the younger side as they will have just been put up for sale. However, it seems that the age rage differs per shop and sometimes hamsters as young as 4 weeks are being sold. It’s important to ask questions when you are considering buying a hamster, and the seller should know the date the babies were born.

How do you tell if a hamster is a boy or a girl?

You will need to look at the underbelly of your hamster and measure the distance between the anus and the genital openings (penile in male hamsters and vaginal and urinary in females). The distance is much longer in males than in females. In females they are so close together that they are often touching.

What do pet stores do with unsold hamsters?

Some pet shops discount the hamsters when they get older, though most end up in the rehome section of the shop where people can adopt them. This basically means they give them away. Sometimes employees take them on as well.

What’s the lifespan of a hamster?

While it would be great to give a definitive answer here, it’s hard to say how long your hamster will live and depends very much on the species of hamster, their living conditions and their genetic makeup. Hamsters sometimes bring disease home from their breeder or pet shop and might have a shorter lifespan because of this. On average hamsters live about 2,5 years, with Dwarf and Chinese hamsters typically under this and Roborovski and Syrian hamsters above this average.

As to how long our hamsters will life, there are some factors we have control over, like diet, exercise, cage size, bedding and stress level while other factors like genetics, species and illnesses (either genetic or environmental) are outside of our control. In my view, this means we should enjoy every moment we have with our hamster and give the best care possible so that however long your friend can be with you, it will be the best and happiest time possible.
